I have a fairly narcissistic point of view. For example, several years ago when I originally saw the commercial for the new Fox program entitled “Glee,” I not only made a mental note to watch it, but was convinced only three or maybe four other people would be able to see what a gem of a show this would turn out to be. With the obvious success of Glee, you can imagine my head is fairly inflated. However, until I am widely and monetarily recognized as a prime-time critic, I still suffer from the same woes and inferiority complexes just like the rest of the world.
To combat my feelings of average-ness, I love a good self-help book. Our CEO's latest suggestion for a staff read, START NEXT NOW by Bob Pritchett, was the perfect peace-maker to my always fighting egos. While reading this latest recommendation on personal growth and success, I was happy to see my self-involvement hasn't overpowered my need for self-improvement. According to Mr. Pritchett, “The only people who never suffer Imposter Syndrome are sociopaths and narcissists, and they certainly haven't kept reading this far.” To further prove to Bob that I was not a narcissist, and definitely not a sociopath, I continued to read.
Thankfully, I was not disappointed. Much of the book will have you nodding along with the questions, and flipping the pages to see the answers that make so much sense. Bob Pritchett makes so many amazing points that I'm convinced he is talking to me directly (there goes that narcissism). Despite my self-involvement, I'm convinced, the same thing will happen to you. No, no. I'm not trying to say you are a narcissist. Even if you are, I barely know you! That wouldn't be a fair assessment. My point is that I don't have to know you to know this book will speak to you. Bob has written this book for you. It's full of first person anecdotes that you will find truth in no matter where you are in life. I believe at the core of this book, Bill wants you to find success. He doesn't need to write a book to make money. Heck, he doesn't need to write a book at all, he already did! The man just wants you to be given the same opportunity to dream and explore those dreams as he did. And his belief is that it's never too late to start.
Here at Showit, we happen to believe the same thing. Our CEO, Todd Watson, believes this so much, he had a room full of creatives stand up and recite three keys to success:
Be brave.
Work Hard.
Don't give up.
So, when you are flipping through the book, you will see Todd Watson, CEO of Showit‘s stamp of approval. Todd, Bob, and all of us here, even narcissistic me, believe everyone has their own dream and was given the ability to achieve it. Read the book. Dog-ear the pages that speak to you. (Try not to dog-ear all of them.) Then reference it when you need a little pat on the back and swift kick to the rear all at the same time! You got this!
