Many people realize they are in for a major life change when they become parents. For a good portion of new parents, the change involves a tiny person and an unanticipated list of new priorities. When Sarah Martin became a parent, she not only received a baby, but she also received a new-found passion and love of newborns that extends far beyond her own.

“After I had my first daughter, almost 7 years ago, I became entranced with documenting her every move. I had to learn everything about the camera and how to take the very best photos of her. I started taking night school college courses so I could learn more. Around that time my maternity leave ended and I started work again. I became to loathe the 9-5 office job and decided that I would quit my job and start a photography business. It didn't happen so easily in the beginning as I was still working part-time until I was able to generate enough income through my business.”As a former financial analyst, Sarah approached her new passion with a plan. The first step after taking university classes? Find some mentors! She knew she wanted to gain hands-on experience from leaders in her area of newborn photography. “I wanted to find a photographer to teach me how to do the art of newborn photography safely. This was very important to me. When I met with Shelly Ferguson, most of all it was her patience that really stuck with me through all these years. I admired how carefully and patiently she posed her newborns. She took her time and perfected each pose.” After mentoring with Shelly, she went on to spend time with Erin Tole Photography, as well. With the education and experience, Sarah was starting to feel ready to step out on her own.
As any Showiteer knows, it takes a village to raise a small business! Sarah knows this first hand. She credits her husband and friends, Destiny Wentzel, and Christin Carruthers for supplying her with the courage and support to get where she is today. “I couldn't imagine being where I am today without some of my talented friends and their friendship. I (also) wouldn't have been able to do any of this without the love and support of my husband. He has been a rock through this journey and encouraged me every step of the way.“

If you are about to step out on your own, Sarah will give you the same advice she has followed. “Be the best you can be!! Pull from all resources and immerse yourself with your passion. Go out and take workshops, talk to other photographers whose style you admire and watch tutorials.” And, if we might add, take Sarah's advice when it comes to mentors, too!
