There are so many reasons why, as a website designer, I love Showit as a design platform. From its flexibility to its ease in showing clients how to manage, it is a great tool for building a beautiful website. There is a great group of designers that work with Showit, with more joining the forces every day. If you have a desire to become a designer, but don't know where to start, we hope to help you out with some tips and general knowledge from the Design Smiths themselves. This week, we asked:

What is the one piece of advice you would give Showit designers who are just starting out?

Ashley Stamper: Think outside of the box, literally. As a designer we are accustomed to working with grids. Showit provides a blank canvas, so your creativity with customizing your client's website layout is absolutely endless!

Katie Durski: I'd say designing with animation in mind. I try to imagine how parts of the site will move on and off the screen and interact with each other.

Some great advice! The biggest thing for me when starting a business, any business, is to stay organized. This can be especially hard if you are not working with clients face-to-face. I've found that having a good project management system like Basecamp or 5pm helps tremendously in keeping things organized and making sure I stay in constant contact with my clients. It's an investment worth making for your business!

Ask the Design Smiths will be a recurring featurette where we get input from Showit designers on being a designer, starting out in the design business, working with clients, and client management. If you have any questions you would like us to ask the designers, please let us know via email at rachael@earlandlayne.com.
